North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has confirmed the appointment of a new Strategic Director of Place.

James Arnold, who will take up the role in January, is an architect-planner who has worked in private practice and for city and district authorities for more than 25 years.

"I am delighted to have been appointed Strategic Director for Place at North West Leicestershire District Council and I am very much looking forward to working with the council, colleagues, developers, the local community and external partners to make real improvements to the district," James said.

The Strategic Director of Place role will head up the Community Services and Planning and Regeneration departments, with a key focus on NWLDC's emerging Local Plan, its project to build a new leisure centre in Coalville and on improving urban design in the district.

Having studied at The University of Nottingham, James has worked in North East Derbyshire, Bolsover, Sheffield, Nottingham and East Yorkshire. He has also served on a number of design panels around the country, and is committed to working collaboratively to improve places and the environment.

James added: "I have been deeply impressed by the ambition of North West Leicestershire to make the most of its many assets – including its towns and villages, beautiful countryside and transport links – to support well-being, opportunity and prosperity for local people.

"I am now committed to play my part in this effort, and I have confidence that the district has every reason to feel confident that its future will reflect these ambitions."
